Next week Pope Francis’ visit to the United States will bring our core issues to the forefront. This is a unique moment in America, as the attention of millions will be drawn into conversations about income inequality, immigration, racial justice and climate change when they are highlighted during the papal visit.

The pontiff, often referred to as the “People’s Pope,” is one of the most popular and most watched leaders in the world. According to Twiplomacy, Pope Francis is the most influential world leader on Twitter. He has demonstrated global moral leadership on our critical fights—economic, immigrant, racial and environmental—and he speaks in the context of values that working people hold dear: family, community, inclusion and “people over profit.”

Colorado Connection: Vigil & Foot Washing for Immigrants, the Imprisoned & Workers

Along with Together Colorado, the SEIU Local 105 community will hold a parallel vigil with other PICO Organizations across the country to recognize the marginalized in our society – the immigrants, the imprisoned and workers.

On Thursday morning, Sept. 24, Pope Francis will address a joint session of the U.S. Congress at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. This leader of millions will hold the attention of a deeply divided Congress to address the need for better action on the issues we fight for every day. Members can join in and share their reactions to the speech as it happens by signing on to our live chat at SEIU.org.
